Also famous for the Marathon Run, now held all over the World, originated from Greece?  It dates back as far as 490 BC, when a battle at Marathon was taking place between the Athenian army, and the invading Persian army. The Athenian army won, despite being out number by around 10-1. General Miltiades sent a messenger to Athens to inform the city of it’s victory.  Hence the first marathon was born.  This historic event is commemorated today by hundreds of marathons being held each year all over the World.

Greece’s capital is Athens, and it is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe.  It’s name was taken from the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena. Why not travel Greece and make Athens your first stop.  It is a city full of historical cultural heritage, with the remains of some famous ancient buildings.  Athens was also the home of some of the worlds oldest Philosophers, Socrates, Aristotle and Plato.

Experience the Beautiful Beach Area in Marathon.

Schinias Beach at Marathon – Schinias, Marathon, Athens.
Located within an hour of central Athens. Schinias Beach is known for being one of the most beach areas of Greece. It is close to Marathon with it’s main attraction being the picturesque coastal of pine forest. This is an excellent spot for a day trip and a relaxing day.

Acropolis – Dionysiou Areopagitou St Athens.

The Acropolis consists of several temples. The most magnificent temple is Parthenon, which is dedicated to the Goddess Athena.  Although the Parthenon has been damaged over the many centuries since it’s creation.  It is still one of the most historic buildings in Greece today. There is also a small museum features with an impressive collection of ancient Greek sculptures.

Travel Greece and Visit A Famous Museum or Two.

Kanellopoulos Museum – Panos Street, Plaka, Athens.

This a beautiful 19th-century mansion showcases a fabulous collection of ancient Greek art, including some Egyptian art.  The famous funerary mask of Fayum is on show.  You will also see weapons, pottery, coins, jewellery, sculptures, plus other artefacts from the Byzantine era.

Opens: Tue – Sun 9:00am – 4:00pm.

Tomb of the Athenian Warriors – Tymvos Marathona, Marathon, Athens.

This museum contains the remains of 192 brave Athenians soldiers who died, while serving in the battle at Marathon against the Persian army. This monument was erected in honour of the Athenian soldiers.

Opens: Tue – Sun 8:30am – 3:00pm.

Beautiful Picturquese Gardens.

National Garden, Botanological Museum and Zappion Gardens, Amalias Avenue, Athens.

The National Garden right next door to the Parliament building.  At the entrance, you will see a sun dial and a row of huge century-old palm trees. There is a museum highlighting a selection of seeds and plants.  There is a duck pond, café and a children’s playground, within the Garden.  You can go along to the park, popular with the locals and where the Zappion Exhibition Hall is located.

The capital city is definitely a destination worth considering if you do decide to travel Greece.  Alternatively, Crete, Rhodes and Corfu are also popular travel choices.
